Here is a great tip for you with fireplaces. Instead of useing or in addition to using newspapers for your kindling try dried orange, lemon and lime peels. They create less creosite. Not to mention that the flammable oils that are found inside them are going give you a flame that lasts a lot longer than the paper. Give it a try and it will smell nicer too.
