It has to have a minium 'active' level of 10 to be given a UMF rating, and this can go as high as a UMF 30. Although UMF 30 is very hard to get, as it is just a small proportion of what is naturally produced each year. It is also possible to get it in sterilised form, or in ready made dressings for external use in wounds, eg as part of the manuka honey range by Comvita. This is a natural remedy that actually has some proper scientific research to back it up - when referring to the UMF labelled manuka honey. However this does not include helping prevent cancers and heart problems. It is an area being researched, but there is currently no evidence to support that claim.
